Susan Sarandon fine with ‘grandmother’ role in The Lovely Bones

SUSAN Sarandon greeted fans and offered wise words on ageing gracefully as she walked the red carpet for the Australian premiere of The Lovely Bones.

The 63-year-old Hollywood star dazzled in a cerise Diane von Furstenberg dress with a plunging neckline and flat gold shoes.

Sarandon plays a grandmother in the film based on the best-selling novel by Alice Sebold about a young girl who is murdered and watches over her family from heaven.

It’s Sarandon’s first role playing a grandmother, but she was comfortable in the part, she said.

“I didn’t register it as being that big a deal, and she’s such a strange grandmother. She’s not a granny grandmother, and I’m old enough to be a grandmother,” she said.

Sarandon said it was important for young people to look after themselves.

“Don’t smoke as I do in the movie. Probably don’t drink too much. Be happy,” Sarandon said.

Directed by New Zealander Peter Jackson, the movie also stars Saoirse Ronan, Mark Wahlberg, Rachel Weisz and Stanley Tucci.

The movie opens nationally on December 26.
