Susan Sarandon impressed with Cusco archaeological legacy
Peru’s Trade Minister Martin Perez told the press that American Oscar-winning actress Susan Sarandon “was delighted” after her visit to Machu Picchu and other places surrounding Cusco City.
The actress was toured to Sacsayhuaman fortress, attended an exhibition of Peruvian Paso horses and met local weavers in Chinchero.
She also had a private dinner with Minister Perez and his wife: “She has really enjoyed Peruvian gastronomy,” said the Minister.
Reportedly, Sarandon was pleasantly surprised by the great agricultural diversity she has seen in Peru, especially by the different kinds of Peruvian potatoes.
The actress is currently in Peru as a part of the program “Celebrities” that Peru has launched to reactivate tourism in Cusco, and she will visit Puno today (March 29th).
Architect Michael Graves of Princeton, N.J., is being inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame (NJHOF).
Graves was among 15 elected to the Class of 2010 by the East Rutherford, N.J.-based NJHOF, with the others including legends and luminaries ranging from jazz great Count Basie to President Woodrow Wilson.
The Class of 2010 was announced by then Governor-elect Chris Christie in December. The impressive list also includes music legends Les Paul and Frankie Valli, feminist Alice Paul and baseball pioneer Larry Doby, as well as movie stars Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon and Danny DeVito and novelists Judy Blume and Phillip Roth. Rounding out the list are track and field superstar Carl Lewis, Supreme Court Justice William Brennan and Wally Schirra, one of the original Mercury 7 astronauts.
The Class of 2010 will be inducted at a gala red carpet ceremony on Sunday, May 2, at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark, N. J.
“This will be a proud moment for AIA-NJ,” said Jason Kliwinski, AIA, LEED AP, president of AIA-NJ. “Michael Graves’ election to the New Jersey Hall of Fame is an acknowledgement not only of his own extraordinary achievements, but also of the importance to the public of the profession of architecture. We encourage everyone with an interest in architecture and design to join us in celebrating this event.”
“The previous two ceremonies were terrific shows that were covered by all the major networks,” said Don Jay Smith, executive director of the NJHOF. “The living inductees accepted in person, plus there were many surprise guest presenters and great music, including a surprise performance by Bruce Springsteen. We look forward to another terrific celebration in 2010.”
‘Leaves of Grass’ follows twins; ‘Sweetgrass’ joins a sheep drive
“Leaves of Grass,” written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson, is one of the most unusual “two handers” to hit theaters in quite some time — a classically themed family drama about identical twin brothers (both played by Edward Norton) that also manages to pull off some rather ribald pot jokes.
The film, which opens Friday in New York City and Dallas with additional dates to follow, features an Ivy League classics professor (Norton) who is drawn back to his native Oklahoma under false pretenses. Once there, he reluctantly reengages with his mother (Susan Sarandon) and is drawn into helping his rebellious twin brother, who has turned into something of a savant at growing marijuana. When things go wrong with a Tulsa businessman/drug dealer (played with zeal by Richard Dreyfuss), things get complicated.
Nelson wrote the dual parts with Norton in mind. The pair recently sat down for an interview in Austin, Texas, after the film’s screening at the South By Southwest film festival. Although Norton says that being offered a part written specifically for him in and of itself did not influence him to take the part, it was the dual role that helped persuade him.
“I’ve said this jokingly, but it is kind of true,” Norton said. “Actors spend a lot of time hunting around trying to find a role, so if you offer them two very good roles, you’ll put on a dog collar and be led around wherever they want you to go. It’s a very good way to get an actor to come work on your project.”
Hollywood News: How did the script come to you and what attracted you to this role?
Mulligan: The script came to me through my agent. It was the normal audition process. I think part of the attraction was that she is somewhat lighter. I think she kind of defers her grief to them because she couldn’t possibly feel as much as they do. There is sort of a generosity in that. I think she is trying to find a security and a base, and she is trying to be attached to him by being with them. I like the idea of working with a small company of actors, and with those actors especially. It kind of feels like theater. Susan [Sarandon] and Pierce [Brosnan] were a huge draw because I didn’t know Shana [Feste]. The minute we met and started working together, I just loved her.
Hollywood News: How does it differ working with female directors compared to working with a male director on Wall Street 2?
Mulligan: Oliver! It is different, but I can’t say if it is a female thing, a male thing, or just a barrel of individuals. With Lone [Scherfig] on An Education, she has a brilliant bluntness where there is no reward or punishment. If you are good, you are good. If you are bad, you are bad and she doesn’t favor you. She is very even. She really was dedicated to telling the story in the best way possible and has no ego at all. I loved her. She had an outsider’s perspective in that she is Danish, so she could view England in a way we wouldn’t. With Shana, it is her material and she was so passionate about it. She got it made. She trusted us with these parts, and it felt like a family environment because we were thrust together so fast and we had very little time. Susan kind of became the mother of all of us. Shana worked her ass off and it was insane. She was incredible.

Who’s the Greatest? Susan Sarandon may be, at least according to co-star and Oscar-nominated actress Carey Mulligan, who says she was “lucky” to have worked with the veteran performer, whom she dubbed a “machine”.
Their film The Greatest, which also stars Pierce Brosnan of James Bond fame, is set to open in New York and Los Angeles on April 2.
“The subject matter was so harsh sometimes and sad and a lot of people have to, I sometimes have to go into a bit of a dark hole when I’m dealing with that kind of stuff and she (Sarandon) can just switch it on and off like that,” Mulligan told On The Red Carpet’s Rachel Smith at the recent Los Angeles premiere of the film. “She’s like a machine. She’s incredible.”
The movie follows a family’s tumultuous journey after their older son is killed in a car crash. Mulligan plays a woman who shows up on their doorstep after his death, informing them she is pregnant with his child. the family takes her in reluctantly and her presence then both distances and bonds the family.
“Every morning I had to remind myself to not be intimidated but at the end of the day when you’re directing these incredible actors, it just makes you look really good as a director,” director Shana Feste said. “I was just like, ‘I’m going to look really good at the end of this’, because they are absolutely brilliant.”
Brosnan said his participation in the movie as both an actor and producer was a no-brainer due to Feste’s delivery of a “beautiful script on a very hard topic” along with an “impeccable” cast.
