Susan Sarandon on Crutches: From Break Dancing?

Posted on April 16th, 2010 | Posted in Appearance, Charity, Other | No Comments »

Ever the fashion plate, Susan Sarandon was sporting a new accessory at Wednesday’s New York premiere of HBO’s biopic about right-to-die activist Jack Kevorkian, You Don’t Know Jack: a black foot bandage and crutches.

The cause? “Break dancing,” the Oscar winner told reporters in jest, before finally coming clean – and revealing that she fell while in Port-au-Prince on a recent mercy mission to St. Damien Children’s Hospital, along with Demi Moore and other stars on behalf of Artists for Peace and Justice, as the island still recoves from the devastating Jan. 12 earthquake.

“I was in Haiti and it’s the rainy season and I slipped. I mean, it’s a very boring story,” said Sarandon, 63. “It happened the night before I left. But I would prefer to say it was from break dancing or surfing or soccer. It still hurts, but it’s nothing.”

As for what Sarandon saw on her trip, “It was overwhelming, really, and very moving,” she said, admitting that she was especially touched by the children. “I’m hoping that the trip and everybody that went on it will in some way renew people’s commitment when they understand what’s going on.”

Sarandon’s visit did not mark her first contact with the pediatric hospital, which offers free medical care to Haitian children. “We had done a benefit at [SPiN New York, the ping-pong club in which she is an investor], and we sent the money to St. Damien’s, so it was great to be able to go down and recommit.”

Pacino portrays Kervokian in the series during the years when he launched a campaign to provide what he considers a human and dignified option for the terminally ill: physician-assisted suicide.

Al Pacino and co-star Susan Sarandon talked to reporters about their latest roles.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and world-renowned pianist Lang Lang gave a special performance last night (March 21st) for a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall in New York, to benefit UNICEF’s emergency response to the earthquake in Haiti.

Mr. Lang performed with the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra, featuring many of the world’s finest classical musicians under the age of 27. Maestro Christoph Eschenbach directed the programme, which included works by Beethoven, Mozart and Prokofiev.

The concert was presented by Columbia Artists Management, Inc. and the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, and was sponsored in part by Montblanc, a UNICEF corporate partner since 2004. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors Angélique Kidjo and Susan Sarandon were in the audience along with other special guests, while Haitian-born singer Wyclef Jean made a special appearance with Mr. Lang onstage.

Keeping Haiti in the spotlight
“For the past six years, I have had the honour of being a UNICEF ambassador,” said Mr. Lang. “I know what they are doing to help the children of the world, and I know what they are doing right now, tonight, to help the children of Haiti.”

Susan Sarandon shines at Australian premiere of Lovely Bones

Posted on December 11th, 2009 | Posted in Appearance, The Lovely Bones | No Comments »

PLAYING a pill-popping, wine-guzzling, insensitive grandma in new emotional drama The Lovely Bones doesn’t really resonate with Susan Sarandon.

In fact on the George St red carpet for the Peter Jackson -directed film last night, the feisty Hollywood heavyweight revealed being the exact opposite was the key to her eternal beauty.

“Don’t smoke as I do in the movie, don’t drink too much and just be happy,” was her advice to Confidential.

Sarandon returns to the US today after a 24 hour visit, but hinted she may return next year.

Susan Sarandon fine with ‘grandmother’ role in The Lovely Bones

Posted on December 10th, 2009 | Posted in Appearance, The Lovely Bones | No Comments »

SUSAN Sarandon greeted fans and offered wise words on ageing gracefully as she walked the red carpet for the Australian premiere of The Lovely Bones.

The 63-year-old Hollywood star dazzled in a cerise Diane von Furstenberg dress with a plunging neckline and flat gold shoes.

Sarandon plays a grandmother in the film based on the best-selling novel by Alice Sebold about a young girl who is murdered and watches over her family from heaven.

It’s Sarandon’s first role playing a grandmother, but she was comfortable in the part, she said.

“I didn’t register it as being that big a deal, and she’s such a strange grandmother. She’s not a granny grandmother, and I’m old enough to be a grandmother,” she said.
