‘Leaves of Grass’ follows twins; ‘Sweetgrass’ joins a sheep drive

“Leaves of Grass,” written and directed by Tim Blake Nelson, is one of the most unusual “two handers” to hit theaters in quite some time — a classically themed family drama about identical twin brothers (both played by Edward Norton) that also manages to pull off some rather ribald pot jokes.

The film, which opens Friday in New York City and Dallas with additional dates to follow, features an Ivy League classics professor (Norton) who is drawn back to his native Oklahoma under false pretenses. Once there, he reluctantly reengages with his mother (Susan Sarandon) and is drawn into helping his rebellious twin brother, who has turned into something of a savant at growing marijuana. When things go wrong with a Tulsa businessman/drug dealer (played with zeal by Richard Dreyfuss), things get complicated.

Nelson wrote the dual parts with Norton in mind. The pair recently sat down for an interview in Austin, Texas, after the film’s screening at the South By Southwest film festival. Although Norton says that being offered a part written specifically for him in and of itself did not influence him to take the part, it was the dual role that helped persuade him.

“I’ve said this jokingly, but it is kind of true,” Norton said. “Actors spend a lot of time hunting around trying to find a role, so if you offer them two very good roles, you’ll put on a dog collar and be led around wherever they want you to go. It’s a very good way to get an actor to come work on your project.”

New Film Paints A Picture Of Oklahoma As Seen By Tulsa Native

It’s not the Oklahoma we see every day, but one Okie’s perspective on his home state is hitting theaters.

There are plenty of familiar faces — Edward Norton, Richard Dreyfuss, Susan Sarandon and a few familiar places. There’s an airport meant to look like Tulsa’s, Little Dixie down in the southeast corner of the state.

But “Leaves of Grass” paints a picture of Oklahoma most of us have never seen. A summary of the movie reads: “It’s a twisting narrative… merging crime drama, drug comedy, classical philosophy and sudden violence.”

Or from the writer-director’s point of view: home.

“I really put everything I know and love about my home state into this film,” said Tim Blake Nelson, writer and director.

Nelson has been making movies since 1997. The native Tulsan says Oklahoma is more than what most people expect.

“Every state in the country is its own exotic enclave. And if you grew up in a state in the middle of the country and you’re attuned to the specific nature of that state and the different nuances, I think it can be as exotic as doing a film in Berlin or Paris or Singapore,” said Nelson.

The red carpet premiere was in New York City. “Leaves of Grass” is only in a few theaters. It comes out on DVD nationwide in April.

Bill Kincaid is a very celebrated Ivy League philosophy professor on the verge of being hired for a tenure at Harvard, the other brother, Brady Kincaid, is a hydroponics weed-growing genius in rural Oklahoma. Estranged from his family and trying to leave all traces of his Midwestern upbringing behind (including completely burying his accent and essentially severing all ties), the very organized, very straight-laced Bill has not spoken to his brother or his mother (Susan Sarandon) in some 10-years or so, but he’s brought back into the family fold when Brady becomes embroiled in some drug-related crime activity that he needs dire assistance with.

Opening on Christmas Day (US).
